Leave Me Be, Please Come In,  2017

30" diameter

Hand embroidered, hand painted, stick pins

My own personal experience with telling my truth, or even knowing my own truth, became a bigger struggle as I grew older and hoped to develop more clarity about how I presented myself to the world.  As I continued to develop my art practice I found that what I could not say in words, I could find some piece of truth in my needle and thread piercing the fabric.  Although issues still are, at times, unclear, I believe the work has moved me one step closer to a bit more understanding of myself.

This piece was inspired by the reverse side of embroidery work, which I frequently found more interesting than the “right” side. I loved how it would sometimes look like text, maybe the alphabet of another language? Regardless of the symbols I use, my message remains mixed. How can I expect others to understand me when I lack self-knowledge?
